These are the gardens surrounding a modern detached property in the pretty village of Shoreham in Kent. It is built in the grounds of a large period house and, as such, there is access for other residents around the front garden path.
This really is an idyllic setting and our clients wanted the gardens to not only live up to their beautiful location, but also to provide gardens in which they would be happy to both entertain and relax.
The gardens needed a design that married the modern style of the house with the traditional feel of its surroundings.
The front garden
Natural sawn sandstone provides the slightly more contemporary feel, with soft, warm colours that tone in with the house bricks. The fact that it is natural stone also blends with the more traditional character of the rest of the space.
Paths lead from the trellis arch to the front door, through to the side access, and there is also a path from the porch area to the far corner of the garden (next to the shed).
Trellis fencing forms the boundary between the garden and the communal space beyond, and we created screening in front of the oil tank with a flowerbed to soften the effect.
The rear garden
Nearer to the house we created a new patio area, using the same stone as in the front garden. The owners liked the idea of a staggered edge to the paving that includes alternating stripes of stone and grass. The new patio is sited to the eastern side of the patio doors, so that there is an unobstructed view from the living room, and it is slightly away from the house in order to allow for planting beds to partially surround it. This provides a feeling of enclosure and intimacy to the space.
In terms of planting, our clients wanted quite a traditional, cottage style scheme for both front and back gardens, and favourite plants include lacecap Hydrangeas, Roses, Salvias, Perovskias and the Pineapple Broom, among many others. Colours they were not very fond of was bright pink or bi-coloured flowers but they wanted to include plenty of perfumed planting, some herbs and also some espalier fruit trees on the old wall in the front garden.
