Our clients had a large L-shaped garden in Mottingham / Eltham, with a long narrow section next to the house, opening out into a huge square area to the rear.
The garden was dominated by a large swimming pool which was proving expensive to run and, as the children were grown up and the pool did not get used very often, it was no longer cost effective nor very environmentally sound to keep it. Instead our clients wanted a tranquil seating area surrounded by beautiful planting in which to entertain and relax.
The swimming pool was demolished and filled with an incredible 180 tonnes of recycled crushed concrete, before a spacious patio was built over it using soft grey natural sandstone.
Edging and herringbone detail panels were picked out in red brick to match the house.
A generous pergola was constructed using green oak to shade the seating area and in time this will weather to a beautiful silver colour to tone in with the paving. Climbing plants and low raised beds with colourful planting soften the hard landscaping and bring a feeling of enclosure and intimacy to the area, while a natural slate obelisk water feature adds the exciting dimension of sound.
Our client had also always wanted an orchard and we obliged with a number of mixed fruit and nut trees set in a flowering meadow.
Paths will later be mown through the meadow to reach the swing seat and Lutyens bench, from where our client will be able to enjoy views of the bees and insects buzzing amongst the meadow flowers and on towards the more ornamental garden beyond. Birds will also love the new bird bath set into the woodland planting under the trees to the rear.
At night the garden comes alive with a clever lighting scheme, making it not only useable on summer evenings, but also visually accessible in the winter months.
