Our clients had retired to a bungalow not far from the East Sussex coast, and, having improved the interior and added a conservatory, they now wanted to get to work on making a more manageable and attractive garden too.
The existing plot sloped up away from the house and was rather tired in appearance (the deck at the rear was a particular eyesore) and, although our clients are keen gardeners, they felt that a complete change was necessary to bring it up to scratch.
The new garden incorporates curves and changes of levels to add interest to the rather angular plot, and although the garden was planted out in very early spring so that not much was showing, the strong design makes for interest throughout the year.
Dining outside and having space to entertain family and friends was an important consideration for our clients, but the existing block paved area was too small, so we created a deeper patio surrounding the house using honey-coloured, riven stone to complement the yellow brick of the house. Raised beds surround the patio, bringing planting up to a level where it can be appreciated from inside the conservatory – less bending to tend to it too!
We levelled the sloping lawn to make it easier for mowing by adding a couple of steps up from the patio next to the house. A curving path then leads to the utility area at the back, incorporating those important items for the keen gardener – a shed and a greenhouse – all cleverly screened with trellis and planting.
A more intimate circular seating area nestles in the far corner.
